I seem to recall re[ading an article a few years ago that implicated this
drug used in labor as interfering with newborn suck. I cannot find the
reference in my files. Have I remembered this wrong or does someone have
some information on this?

I'm upset because my daughter's boyfriend's sister just gave birth at the
hospital [by which I will probably be employed next week] and the baby was
already shutting down at the breast 28 hours after birth. She wasn't coming
fully awake, which was part of it, the father was having a great time bonding
and holding her, but the mom was somewhat tentative. The most frustrating
thing was that although the night nurse had worked with her and gotten a good
latch-on the night before, the mother told me the day-shift nurses hadn't
really showed her anything or any other positions or checked to see if the
baby had latched on and sucked well. And she hadn't since nighttime. It
was 3 o'clock in the afternoon. I know that when the lactation program was
set up at this small community hospital that charting involved observing at
least one good session at the breast per shift. So, the is still room for
improvement.

I'm wondering if the nurses are frustrated because the drugs are affecting
the babies and it is hard for them to get babies latched-on when they are
just born due to the medications. They may be lowering their expectations of
what the baby can due, hoping things will wear off and the go okay and
possibly relying on the expertise of the LC who has just moved away to
another community.

Any comments? Thanks.
