Kathy Bell, I have seen this, and not to worry.  As long as mom doesn't
reinfect, the wounds will close.  They will drain milk during let-down
especially, but the opinion I have (shared with others) is that this is ok
and maybe even beneficial as it bathes the wound with anti-infective
properties in the milk.  The wounds are slow to heal, tho, and its a messy
process.  It looks and feels mutilating.  If the woman elects to wean, it
can be done unilaterally, and should be done very slowly with a pump so that
fistulas and more abscesses are not caused by the retention of more milk
pressure than the breast can tolerate.  What concerns me is that they are
still culturing pathogens from that breast. That must be dealt with or
wounds won't heal.
