>We had an in-service on July 1, and if I remember correctly, the new
schedule will be IPV (injection) for doses 1 and 2, then OPV (oral) for
doses 3 & 4. The rationale is that the only polio cases in the US are
vaccine-induced, and the IPV is not a live virus vaccine, therefore will not
induce polio illness. Once immunity from IPV kicks in, then OPV is safe.
The health department nurse also said that since there are so many new
immunizations, and since there is concern that moms won't bring in kids for
5 or 6 shots, new combined vaccines will be available soon to reduce the
number of injections. One example: combining varicella with MMR for
one-year-olds.
