Hello friends-I have been absent from Lactnet for a while-duty calls! I
would like to throw this out for comment from any of you working in
hospitals/birth centers, etc.
Do you have a written policy regarding breastfeeding if the mother uses
illicit drugs, such as cocaine, marijuana, opiates? Is she told that she is
prohibited from BF? Is she counseled, but allowed to BF if she chooses? How
is the decision made-because she is positive for drugs on admission? Or
positive during the pregnancy?
If no written policy, is there a "standard practice" in your institution for
this ?
We all know illicit drugs in breastmilk are not good for babies, but the
nitty-gritty of handling the situation is not so simple in these days of big
litigation. My hospital is researching this, and I welcome input from any
and all. You may email me directly, and I will be glad to share the results
of this informal survey with Lactnetters.
Thanks in advance!
