Hi all-
Once again I am writing on Nancy Williams' behalf. She is currently in
another state awaiting the birth of her sister's baby, ready to help. In the
meantime, she has been trying to solve a long-time puzzle, and has at last
uncovered an important piece.
Nancy's sister has had excruciating breastfeeding experiences; each of her
three babies has caused her unremitting pain inspite of good technique and
skilled help. (Nancy has even put one to her own breast and felt the
clamping and pain, but was unable to change the suck with normal training
measures) Further, each of the children have been somewhat unusual,
especially #3, who has just been diagnosed as sensory defensive (SD). This
last child is a toddler who is just learning to crawl, and who displays
temper tantrums and behavior that is at times reminiscent of autism.
According to an OT, SD tends to be familial, and she feels that the
breastfeeding problems with *all* of the children are related to this. In
the meantime, because the mom's pain is similar to Raynaud's phenomena type
symptoms, Nancy has also been pursuing treatments for that, such as Magnesium
(anybody know the appropriate dosage?). Can't leave a stone unturned!
So-- I'm confident that someone out there has experience with sensory
defensive babies and understands the underlying issues better than we. Baby
#4 is due any day now, so any and all help and references would be
appreciated very much.
TIA,
Lisa Marasco, IBCLC
