Diane,

I was at a two day conference a couple of months ago. They talked about
women who were undernourished being given supplements to significantly boost
their nutritional status. The result was that babies born to these women
after supplements were given gained no better than their siblings born
before supplements were given. The presenters at the conference postulated
that what might be happening was marasmus (sp?). If the babies were
adequately clothed and fed but were not loved or attended to emotionally,
the babies failed to thrive. This sounds a lot like the babies in the
orphanages that did not survive.

Good luck with this situation.
