Hi Lactnetters!
I've been lurking here for a about a month before I have had the confidence
to reply to anything. So here I am.I 'm Chris Short from Sydney Australia and I
am a counsellor with the NMAA and have been for about ten years. I have sort
of specialised in prenatal education and have presented the topic of Thrush
at a few health professional seminars. My background is echocardiography.
I have four daughters 14,11,7,and 4.I have breastfed them all and in fact this
month is the first in 15 years that I have not been pregnant or breastfeeding
or both.
So to get on with what I was going to reply to!
Jonathon, with regards to the lady with "nursing pain" in my own
experience
and with many mothers I have counselled toddlers do tend to clench their teeth
shut as they fall asleep.Babies don't.This is agood reason to take them gently
off the nipple a soon as start to get very drowsy.
Some older children also get less fussy about the position they nurse in.
I had to make sure that my toddlers lifted their chin and opened their mouth
wide when attaching.Just simply saying no ,open wide would remind them.
This seems to be more of a problem in early pregnancy-so maybe it is also
hormonally related?Hope this helps.
Chris Short NMAA counsellor
Sydney Australia.
