Wow! Thanks for all the support. I love you guys! Anyway, I'm glad I
waited until I calmed down and talked to the daycare director last night.
Apparently, this all came about because they had gone to a workshop that
was put on by the Public Health Department here. It's the Health
Department that is telling the daycare that the breastmilk must be in
bottles!! Apparently I am not the only mom affected by this (which
surprised me, but I couldn't find out who the other mom(s) is(are)) The
director was very supportive and said she understands that breastmilk is
much better for Timothy and she doesn't want to see him have to use bottles
either. I explained that the CDC does not consider breastmilk to be a
hazardous body fluid. (In response to some of your questions, yes, the
daycare workers do wear gloves when they change diapers, and yes, they are
sipper seal cups that all the kids use. The kids only have cups when
they're strapped into their chairs for snacks and lunch, so sharing
shouldn't be a problem. Bottles are only given while the caregiver is
holding the child, so there wouldn't be any sharing that way either). She
said she would call the Public Health Department today and give them this
information and confirm that their position is that breastmilk should not
be given in cups. If so, I asked her to give me the names of who I would
need to contact to provide them with some up to date information. I'm
willing to take on the Health Department if I have to. (If I'm lucky,
they'll take into consideration my credentials, since medical technologists
are becoming more involved with infection control, and maybe they'll
actually listen to me.) If I end up needing to take on the Health
Department here, I hope you folks will give me some words of wisdom on ways
to go about it and good references. I'll keep you posted and thanks again
for all of your wonderful responses!!
