On maternity leaves: I hate to burst the bubble, but I think it would be an
ideal world where even if all parents received a subsidized 1 year
maternity leave that their kids would turn out ok. We, unfortunately,
would still have people who choose to be parents before they are ready
to take on the responsibility that parenthood requires. There are parents
who would still neglect their kids, even when they are all in the same
house together! We may need LESS money for prisons, etc., but the
need would still be there.
On lifestyle choice: I agree that breastfeeding is a health choice.
However, parenthood is a lifestyle choice; and breastfeeding requires
parenting skills that some people are not ready for. Therefore, for some
people, choosing to breastfeed would interfere with their lifestyle.
Maybe we should only let people who intend to breastfeed have kids
(tongue somewhat in cheek).
I think I'll go home now.....this note sounds really depressing.....maybe it's
all the rain.....Debi VanderMey, Portland, OR
