Hello Lactnetters!
Thank you for hours of reading pleasure, enrichment, and support. My name is
Karen Forsthoff. I am a LLLL and IBCLC in private practice. I live in
Hollis, New Hampshire with my husband and three breastfed children 12, 7 and
4 years of age.
I recently attended a meeting where the wife of a local pediatrician was
present looking for advice on how to wean her 13 month old. She stated that
breastmilk has no nutritional value after one year and that she can't
continue nursing just because her child has nothing better to do. I stated
that breastmilk continues to provide nutritional and immunological benefits
as long as the child is nursing. (There were several pregnant and new moms at
this meeting!) She rolled her eyes at me and said I was wrong and that
since her information is from a pediatrician she would know the facts. I was
infuriated by her arrogance and angry with myself for not having an immediate
source to quote from.
Does anyone know of a study on nutritional benefits of breastmilk during the
toddler years which would be appropriate to send this couple? Also, I have
heard the AAP may change their recommendation of breastfeeding up to two
years. It was brought up during the meeting and this woman balked at it
saying it was impossible. TIA!
