Hi - I thought that I would update you on the crying baby
I had presented a
month ago. She is about 9 weeks old and gaining well but
still crying. She
was hospitalized twice for observation and tests. The
reflux, and anal
stenosis diagnosis was dismissed. She had a barium enema
which was fine.
During 2 hospitalizations the baby sleep 4 hours between
feeds at night.
Hmmmm. In short the doctors feel that this baby is crying
because of the
parents stress. If this is it, I would say that it is a
secondary reaction.
The parents became extremely stressed when she began to
cry and not gain
weight....and things began to snowball. When she was 7 weeeks old they tried
formula - after the first bottle she slept...and at this point the parents
were so relieved that they would have given up breastfeeding. After the
second bottle she vomited and cried as usual. THe mother felt she would not
try this again. A two week milk elimination diet brought no relief. Her
father reports that she moans in her sleep. I saw the baby again this week
and she has plumped up. She is extremely alert and winning when not crying.
One of these babies that you expect to start talking to you... She nurses
beautifully - no gulping...she continues to be nursed a few times on one
side before switching as this was the intervention that fixed her weight
gain. If anyone has not followed this thread and wants to read previous
letters I think I saved them - I would be glad to privately e-mail them.
Can anyone offer any suggestions? I really appreciated the Feedback I
received when we last discussed this. Sincerely Toby
