As families have become more aware of avoiding chemical exposure for
their children, I am receiving an increase in calls about sunscreen
and insect repellants. Does any one have any information about the
use of these products in breastfeeding mothers. (Tom Hale where are
you?) Especially preparations which are not recommended for infants.
The list includes such products as OFF, Deep Woods OFF, DEET, Skin-
so-Soft, Citronella, and all of the commercial sunscreens. How can
families protect themselves from mosquitoes and the sun without
exposing their babies to these chemicals? How much gets in breastmilk
and what is the level of exposure to the nursling and what risks are
associated with its use? Thanks. Cathy Liles
