Hi all,
Just to let you know that I'm ready to open the bookstore any time....
I have a mom who is EAGER to bf....but her birth experience left a bit of
something to be desired. She, of course, was pitted, had an epidural, and
the typical meaty "pitocin" nipples (which are short & stubby anyway). Baby
has a short tongue that she just loves to keep posterior to the gum line &
has a hard time bringing it out. To top it off, baby was evidently suctioned
VIGOROUSLY with a bulb syringe in the nose. Baby's nares are swollen, and
although she can breathe quietly at rest, or with something small in her
mouth, as soon as she opens wide or gets a large amount of br tissue into the
mouth, she can't breathe comfortably, so opens up to get a breath & loses the
breast. I'm sure part of the problem is that she isn't getting her tongue
down and out far enough to draw the tissue into the mouth really well, so
it's compounded by having her tongue slightly humped up too. It's better
today, but yikes -- why do we have to have such intense suctioning in the
nose? I once had a Brazilian OB who told me they don't like to use the bulb
syringe on the nose because it can actually take little tiny pieces of the
nasal tissue out. Well, it certainly can cause inflammation and swelling.
Just another little something to interfere with bf. Sigh.
