Phentermine HCl (Fastin) comes in 30 mg capsules (generic forms are
available). It is administered "30 mg 2 hours after breakfast". The Nurse
Practitioners' Prescribing Reference lists "Pregnancy" under its' list of
PRECAUTIONS. Lactation is not mentioned. Fastin is a sympathomimetic. One of
the side effects is dry mouth and I tend to wonder if it would also have an
effect on the milk supply...but I have no documentation on this.
Fenfluramine HCl (Pondimin) is also a sympathomimetic. It comes as a 20mg
scored tablet. It is prescribed 3 times daily before meals and can be
increased weekly by 20mg daily with a max. of 40mg 3 times daily. (All this
info comes from the source mentioned above) This book lists under
PRECAUTIONS Pregnancy (Cat. C) and Lactation...among others.
Both medications are used as "short term adjunct in management of exogenous
obesity" The use of the combination of drugs seems to have come from a study
done by a Dr. Weintraub conducted at the University of Rochester Medical
Center. This was a 210 week study in which the 121 participants did regain
the weight lost once they discontinued the use. I have a copy of the
Weintraub report which I could email to anyone interested BUT I will be on
vacation for a week , thus can't respond to email till the following week.
Hopes this helps.
