Hi All!
I got to see my first Frenototmy this morning!!
As an update, I have a WIC mom whose baby had a short frenulum and tore his
mommies nipples up trying to BF. So for the last 5 months she has been
pumping and bottle feeding, and trying, in vain, to find a Ped or someone who
would do this frenotomy. I got involved in the search 'cause the mom just
didn't know what to do anymore. After a long hard search, I found an ENT Dr
who does frenotomies, mom made the appt and then asked me to go with her.
We were unsure as to whether or not the appt would be a consult only, but the
Dr said, what the heck, do you want to do it now? We of course said "Yes!"
After wrapping the baby up papoose style, Dr numbed the frenulum with a
topical anesthetic, then snipped. That was it. Baby got mad only when the
Dr pushed the tongue up to do the snipping. Only a little bit of bleeding,
after a few minutes, baby was fine!
Now for the big test. Tommorrow Mom, baby and I will see our LC at WIC and
see if we can coax this little 5 mo old to go to breast. We may have to
start with a nipple shield and work from there, but we'll see. Maybe he will
go to breast without it. This entire time, mom has been feeding baby a
bottle in a BF position and has been letting baby try to BF, so my hopes are
high! Keep your collective fingers crossed for us!
Jay
