Nursing while on Steroids!
I was just reading my Lactnet and want to add my two cents worth. I was
recently diagnosed with M.S. ( in fact, I got lots of support from you guys
at lactnet and greatly appreciate it.) They treated me with high doses of
Prednisone after 4 days of IV Solu-medrol and here is what I found.
There was a significant decrease in my milk supply with doses of Prednisone
greater than 30 mg a day. I kept a log so if anyone is interested I will
gladly share it.
We did prednisone level on my milk. Cost me a fortune but I wanted to
protect my baby. Even on doses of 80mg a day the prednisone level was safe
for the baby.
The prednisone altered the quality, appearance and the taste of my milk. The
fat content dropped to less than 2% and it had a bitter taste. I also noted
Alex had bitter smelling breath during the course of prednisone therapy. (My
pediatrician suggested it may have been increased gastric acidity, a side
effect of prednisone).
Pumping did not help to increase my milk volume. As soon as I completed the
30 day therapy my milk production normalized.
I would love to share more, but don't want to bore those who are not
interested.... so anyone that wishes can email me at [log in to unmask]
Also, for those of you who have been keeping in touch with me.... the MS
appears to be in remission... my vision has returned and life is back to
normal. I guess something is to be said for prayers. God bless you all.
Laura
