I agree wholeheartedly about the support of women in labor and birth.  There
is so much that can be done to prevent suffering in labor.  Probably one of
the most effective means is the presence of a support person.  Numerous
studies have shown the benefits of labor support.  For a complete listing of
these studies and more information about doulas--professional labor
support--look up the DONA (Doulas of North America) home page on the web (URL
