Hi. My name is Beth Brannum and I am an RN studying to take the IBCLC exam
in July. I have a son who just turned one...but it only seems like last
month. He is probably more computer literate than I am, so please forgive
any mistakes. I have learned quite a bit while lurking around and I am
really enjoying it. My nursing background is mainly in "high risk" OB, but
I also have experience in "routine" ante/intra/post partum care. I was
interested in the post re migraines while breastfeeding and one of the
replies that mentioned the possibility of low magnesium. We gave oral
Magnesium Gluconate for premature labor after we were able to get the Mom
off IV. I am not sure of the exact dosage---it varied with the Mom's
response to meds, but it was a bit less harsh in the laxative area than
MgSo4. May or may not work...but it's an idea. Also, the only time that
we did not allow Mom to bf while on MgSO4 therapy was if she was also
getting multiple other meds such as apresoline, valium, lasix and so on.

I am in the process of developing a Lactation Counseling (hopefully to soon
become Consultant) at our hospital. I am currently rewriting the policies
and searching for or creating the paperwork needed for documentation. If
any of you have any helpful hints, paperwork or suggestions that you can
share, I would be eternally grateful. You may e-mail or send by post. TIA
