Last Friday, a local Philadelphia radio talk station had PA Senator Allison
Swartz as a guest. Senator Swartz has introduced legislation to "legalize"
breastfeeding in public. It was all interesting- all the incoming call
lines immediately lit up, and the program was extended for an extra 30
minutes so that more calls could be heard. There were mostly positive
comments from nursing moms and a couple of what sounded like old farts who
felt the bill was a waste of time. The host, although pro-breastfeeding,
kept harassing the Senator about specific instances in which any mother had
been hasseled about breastfeeding. He also kept insistanting that there were
instances where breastfeeding would not be appropiate (ie: a fancy
restaurant). He really did not get the big picture! My favorite part of the
show was when a caller named Barbara exclaimed, "Women who are
"entertainers" have more rights with what they can do with their breasts
than breastfeeding mothers!"

Just heard that the Breastfeeding Center at Chester Crozer Hospital is going
to be closed! A step backwards for breastfeeding... My condolences to
Chris Mulford who worked so hard to establish this wonderful program.
