I'm wondering if anyone has read the book:
"Wet Nursing: A History from Antiquity to the Present" by Valerie
Fildes. One of the MANY fascinating things she says in the book is in
regard to syphilis.

One occupational hazard of wet nursing was syphilis which can be spread
by breastfeeding.

Does anyone know if this is true? The BREASTFEEDING ANSWER BOOK says
that a mother with syphilis can breastfeed if the newborn does not touch
the sores. Hmm. Any one have any more info?

Thanks

Kathy Kerr who is writing a book review for that REALLY interesting wet
nursing book.
