To all:
I need some urgent help for one of my clients. Over the weekend baby
of 3 months had spiked quite a temp and seen by the afterhours clinic where
a stoo speciman was taken. Baby also had very green stools and diarrhea not
just lose breastfed stools. Salmonella was found in first and second stool
specimans.
Doctor has started baby on Prosobee, a soy based formula and wants
her to stop breastfeeding for a time. Baby does not want to stop so mom will
nurse occassionally. The more she nurses the worse the stools get and the
greener they become. It does get better if she uses more soy formula. Can
mother's milk be tested for salmonella? The rest of the family are being
checked out by stool samples. Does Salmonella travel through breast milk?
Is discontinuing Breastfeeding going to cure the problem. Mother alos seems
to have an over supply problem. This came out when I suggested the use of
more Hind Milk instead of foremilk. I wonder if the salmonella is from
something else and that oversupply is more of a problem. The baby is no
longer feverish and never had to be admitted.
Any suggestions anyone?
