. However, I feel this kind of
exposure is unnecessary and is likely to do more harm than good to
breastfeeding. >>>>>>
One reason I can see for placing ads (or posters of the INFACT variety)
showing exposed breasts is to show that they are not sexual objects or
"genitalia". Thereis a chapter in "Breastfeeding: Biocultural Perspectives"
co-edited by Kathy Dettwyler on this very subject. Western culture is
unusual in viewing breasts in such a sexual manner and many others might
find it odd just as we find it odd that Chinese people once viewed bound
feet erotically. I think if people are caused to examine their culturally
determined views such as this we might learn that they are just that-
culturally determined rather than inherently erotic. Maybe Kathy would like
to elaborate on this.
btw- I'm working on the jaundice and free-radical scavenging references but
I've had myriad computer problems for the past few weeks- including getting
unsubscribed from this list last week. *sigh*- almost fixed.

90% of all new business ventures fail. Apparently, 10% of the time you get
lucky, & that's enough to support a modern economy. I'm betting that's what
separates us from the animals; animals are lucky only 9% of the time. I
suspect this is true because I play strip poker with my cats & they rarely
win. In fact, it's gotten to the point where they run like cowards at the
sound of my electric shaver.- Scott Adams in *The Dilbert Principle*.
