For the last year or so my nine year old has stated very emphatically at
least half a dozen times that his wife better breastfeed or he won't marry
her!  He and my 7 - year old have forgone certain candy bars and chocolate
chips due to their brand for years, even to the extent of wondering if they
should throw out these certain ones after Trick-or-Treating!  They both have
been known to comment LOUDLY when they see that company name while shopping
that it is responsible for babies not nursing and some babies even die; the
ABM aisle brings loud "Yucks!"  Now of course my spouse and I would never
point to an infant at a mall, restaurant, etc. being bottle fed and exclaim
(not quietly) "II can't BELIEVE they're giving that baby that junk!" ...
however I can't say the same for my sons...
I am proud that my sons know that the breast was created to nurture babies,
not as a marketing device for breweries!
From rainy Wisconsin, home of low breastfeeding initiation rates (could it be
because we are the "Dairy State" or perhaps that a certain chocolate company
has one of its corporate headquarters here?!?!) where our work is an uphill
battle.
