I got a phone call from a mom with an 8 month old who has a bilateral cleft
of the soft and hard pallettes. This is an experienced mom fourth breastfed
baby-. The mother pumped for 6 months and now has the baby nursing at the
breast quite successfully.
Now as the baby is preparing for surgery to repair the cleft, the doctor
says baby musy not have the breast for one week before and three weeks after
surgery. Hospital supports this position. they want the baby to be
spoon/bottle fed with a special Pigeon bottle.
This mothers instinct tell her that nursing will be less traumatic than not
nursing. Please give me some sitations that this mom can show to her
doctor. Thanks! Nancy Sherwood IBCLC, LLLL- Perth, Australia
