Dear Kate,
What they probably said was that the hospital had signed a "Letter of Intent"
to become Baby Friendly." That is as far as the effort has been allowed to
go in the United States because of political pressure. There are hundreds of
hospitals across the country who have signed letters of intent.
Unfortunately, our government has not been able to determine specifically
how the initiative should go in the U.S. nor how to assess hospitals. Minda
Lazarov and the U.S. Committee for UNICEF have been fighting valiantly to
keep the initiative alive. However, funds are sparse and resistance is great
due in large part to the "F" word - no, not that one - the one with 7 letters
(I had to stop and count). We have to keep our senses of humor, after all!
(One of my favorite speaking topics....)
