I remember from my undergraduate studies that indeed mate has caffeine,
which is what we are advising pregnant women to avoid.

As it is normally made and consumed in Uruguay, does mate have more
caffeine than fresh brewed coffee as normally made and consumed in the
U.S.? I know I read about this back then, but I am really just guessing
when I say I think so. However, I'm not sure it matters if it contains a
little more or less caffeine. A whole lot less caffeine might be
important, since one might conclude it was OK to drink during pregnancy,
but I don't think this is the case.

Sorbitol and mannitol are sugar alcohols. My guess (not based on research,
just thinking about it) would be that in moderation it would be OK. But I
haven't read about the metabolism of sugar alcohols during pregnancy, so I
will let another nutritionist give more information if available.
