Reading the postings about cows makes me remember some of my experiences
watching other mammals. My husband used to be a research technician. His boss
did research on fodder crops, which are the grasses cattle eat. One of the
rangeland journals had a lot of ads for varieties of beef cattle whose
advantage was the production of adequate milk for the calves' needs. My
grandparents had friends who took the calves of dairy cows and raised them
for veal; they fed them a powdered milk product.

Watching beef cattle feed the calves is interesting. The calf vigorously
butts the cow's udder, which a dairy scientist said was to trigger the
adrenal gland. I wonder if that is why kittens and puppies "knead" the mom.
One of our cats treats my husband as "mom" by sucking on his beard while
massaging his face. Could that be why human babies like to hold onto
something while eating? Does it make the milk flow better? Enough of my talk.
