Hi

Our paper had two huge pictures, one of the baby elephant rejected by his mom
and accompanied by a long article. The other picture showed a keeper
(female) with a human breast pump on a female elephant whose baby had been
put down after being born with a "mangled leg."

The text said that the baby would need milk for two years and right now was
feeding every half-hour. It gains about a pound a day. As well as using the
expressed milk from the other mother, a special formula is being flown down
from Canada! And, the keepers are sleeping with the baby. One sad note was
that the keepers were curtailing some play with the baby because when she
grows to full size, she could become dangerous if she tries to play the the
humans.

When are human animals going accept that baby animals feed frequently and on
demand?! Veterinarians and zoo personnel seem to have known this for years.
