The mother I was helping last week with low milk supply has all but weaned.
When I saw her today and we talked about what had been going on, it became
clear to me that she had pretty much resolved the situation before she had
even called me. Only now did she tell me that she had already been giving
formula. She decided that she was under too much stress and this was
affecting her supply. Why do some people give up before they have even begun
to work on a solution? I suppose it depends on what one sees as the problem.
If the problem is getting calories into the baby, then she has resolved it
by giving formula. If the problem is her low supply, then she can pump to
bring up her supply. If the problem is something the baby is doing which is
causing the low supply, then there are many questions to ask and answer. I
am left with an aching heart for what the baby has lost. I feel particularly
bad because I had seen this mother regularly and she had never asked for help
until it was too late. I know that the good days outnumber the bad, but
sometimes it helps to vent. Thanks for listening.
