I tried to figure out the best single book a few months ago.
I got lots of lactnetters' opinions   It was
almost impossible.  Many opinions but no absolute consensus.

Here is what I think:
For a motivated mom who reads well:
The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding

For a mother who doesn't read quite as well:
Breastfeeding Pure and Simple.

For good diagrams but text has a few flaws:
Bestfeeding

For a slightly different perspective, also a high reading level:
Nursing your Baby
