To the Editor,
Unfortunately, Child has not been the font of wisdom when it comes to accurate
breastfeeding information. But the March "Your Child Now: 10 month Old"
section takes the cake! I would love to see the references proving that
"...youngsters who nurse more than twice a day past their first birthdays may
not eat enough solid foods to get all the nutrients they need." This
statement applies to cow's milk: children who drink more than 2 BOTTLES per
day are in danger of not eating enough solids. There is research evidence
that breastfeeding up to age 3 provides health benefits and is not associated
with dietary deficiencies, even in developing countries. This is because
cow's milk is suited to the needs of calves (strong bones and muscles to run
after mom for the next meal) rather than the needs of humans (brain
development, immune system development).
Parents look to magazines such as Child for accurate information to
assist them in decisions such as when to wean their children. Please be more
vigilant in your fact checking, so you do not lead them astray.
Sincerely,
Catherine Watson Genna, IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation
Consultant)
