I received a call from the head nurse of the Special Care Nursery, saying
that two mothers had told her that the lactation consultant had told them
that it was OK to store milk in food-storage freezer bags. She wanted to know
whether it was true.

I told her that it was true. The choices of how to store milk are in
sterilized bottles, doubled bottle liners, doubled food storage bags, freezer
bags, or the special breastmilk bags. (Our mother-baby unit has a stock of
the special bags which we have the moms collect the milk directly into while
pumping in the hospital.)

She said that I should tell her when I change recommendations. My reply was
that I have always told mothers that they could use the above choices. She
said that food storage bags are not sterile. I pointed out that the bags are
for food storage and I tell the moms to use new bags. She doesn't want to
give moms the special bags because they are expensive. Anyway, I called up
the food bag company to ask about sterility. I looked in all my books for
information. I called LLLI. I suspect the bottle liners are used for
convenience. I've been reading the recent discussions on Lactnet about
freezing milk, of course.

Anybody have any information about food storage bags for milk? TIA

Becky
