Hi my name is Debi. I am from Westmont, IL. I am a RN & presently pursuing
my MSN in nurse midwifery at Frontier School of Nurse Midwifery(CNEP) in
Hyden, KY. I've been an OB/GYN and home care nurse for 6 years and became
very interested in lactation after my first mother-baby visit I performed.
The mother was clueless in how to breastfeed her baby after a 24 hour hospital
discharge. She said she was told the baby would just catch on & feed him
bottles until he did(Yikes!!) I spent more than 3 hours with her & luckily
had my trunk well stocked with M... breastfeeding handbook, BF hotline #, and
a few other handouts. Her milk was not in yet when I saw her at 36 hours & no
signs of it starting to. I really didn't know That much about lactation
problems but had learned to check the baby's suck pattern from a wonderful CNM
friend/colleague! Baby had a definite bottle suck & anytime she put him to
breast he pulled away & screamed. So I immediately referred her to a local LC
after trying without success to get baby latched on after 2 hours. I then
vowed that would never happen again & begin my journey to this July with the
IBCLC exam. Thanks for all the great insight I've gained from Lactnet &
thanks for referring me to this service-Jan & Pat! I've just entered my first
message in response to a question-how exciting it was!
