For Kathleen Bruce:
For your letter to the editor regarding the newspaper article on SIDS, be
sure to mention the 1995 Book by William Sears on this topic ("SIDS: A
Parent's Guide to Understanding and Preventing Sudden Infant Death
Syndrome"). It is written in a clear, understandable style with lots of
practical suggestions and packed with information, including lots on the
protective benefits of breastfeeding. Spears spoke on this topic on
Wisconsin Public Radio (by phone hookup) in September and was wonderful!
Several parents called in who had lost a baby to SIDS, years ago, and he
handled their questions with utmost caring and sensitivity. Most of all,
the book tells parents what steps they can take to minimize (not eliminate)
the risk of this devastating occurrence. Mentioning this title may get
people to ask for it in the library and local bookstores, and get lots more
information than you can fit into a letter.
