Gail,
Have you tried the "inverted nipple hold" with this mom? Rather than the
usual cupping and shaping, have mom try latching the baby on in the
transition hold (cradle hold, arms switched), and with the outside hand
"pinch" the breast 2-3" back from the nipple at the upper outer quadrant
area. The idea is to form an alternate type of wedge that does not
compress the breast but rather loosely pinches some skin together for the
baby to grasp. I don't mean a hurting type of pinch, but one where the
skin will be folded/wrinkled together, rather than smooth. This is kind
of hard to describe, but if you can figure it out, this sometimes works
when all else fails. Good luck!
