Barbara,
I've seen a couple mom's whose milk supply was affected by beginning
replacement thyroid. This was a number of years ago, and I can't recall the
actual time factor. But it must have been a relatively quick period of time
because these women persevered with breastfeeding. (But we could be talking
weeks vs. days ???)
I see no reason why she can't begin therapy with a family practice MD,
certainly if the family practice HCP thinks the mother needs a referral to an
endocrinologist then she can deal with that when it comes up. Replacement
thyroid is relatively cheap, and if this is her problem, she will feel so
much better once she's on meds. For me, personally, it's not the physical
symptoms that bother me so much if I'm off my thyroid replacement, but the
mental effects - forgetfulness, confusion, etc. I wish her well.
Keep us posted about her progress.
