Many institutions used to test all babies this way: it's an outdated
practice. Sterile water is NOT isotonic with the body's fluids.
Breastmilk is better, and has a more manageable flow for the newly
delivered. P.S. Just how many esophageal fistulas do you get in your
facility each year, anyway? Can your neonatologist come up with any
current references in defense of this practice?
