For Ellen McIntyre. Katherine Dettwyler posted on Sat, Oct. 7, 1995 at
07:08:20 on WHO definitions of breastfeeding - what is "exclusive", what is
"predominant", etc. You might want to retrieve this through the archives
and look it over. At the Georgetown U. course I received a copy of a very
good "Schema and Framework for Breastfeeding Definitions," as part of a
presentation by Dr. Miriam Labbok. It has a flow chart which seems clear
and easy to use, defining full and partial breastfeeding, with
sub-categories. I am not sure where you can get a copy, but I will try to
find out this week. If you can get hold of Labbok's article on the
"Lactational Amenorrhea Method..." in Advances in Contraception
1994:10:93-101, it may be in there. This would be a great schema to share
on Rachael Hamlet's breastfeeding web page, if she can get any necessary
permission. I have long felt that we would see far more dramatic
differences between breastfeeding and bottle-feeding groups in research
studies if people would use this schema.
Good luck with your project.
