My name is Dany Gauthier and I am an IBCLC practicing in Montreal, Canada
and a newly elected member of the board of INFACT. I probably got myself
noticed as a first time user yesterday. I am sorry to have caused any
inconveniences.
In Montreal Canada, things have gone a long way since I first became a lactation
consultant in 1991. Now, most hospital are aware that cup or finger feeding
is an alternative to bottle-feeding, and many do use them on a regular
basis. And they finally beleive that nipple confusion is real. This is the
result of much hard work done by Lactation Consultants (only five of us and
only three in private practice), LLL groups and breastfeeding promotion
committees such as the Montreal Breastfeeding Promotion Committee of which I
am a member. But we still have many problems and right now it is cabbage
leaves. Most hospitals in Montreal use them, and that is OK. The problem is
that not having to worry about engorgement, they forget to have the baby
nurse frequently. I wondered if you were experiencing a similar problem. I
also have a question: How long can a hospital keep thawed (previously
frozen) breastmilk in a refrigerator. Some say 24 hrs, others 48hrs. In the
LLLI book they seem to say we can only keep thawed breastmilk for up to 9
hours in the refrigerator. Does anyone know of any references on the
subject. Many hospitals would need them to establish a protocol (mosty in ICUs).
