Just did a suck assessment on a severely tongue-tied baby. Turns out
the LC in hospital recommends a frenotomy, and at 3 day check, ped says that
it's not necessary. Of course, he gave a song and dance about how supportive
he is of breastfeeding--nice guy! (definite sarcasm here!)
Needless to say, she is still having difficulties (i.e., baby can't
maintain descent latch on, on again off again, weak suck). To make things
even worse, mom has a complete supply of bottle nipples that the nurses
helped her pack, so we also have nipple confusion as an added attraction. It
did not take long for me to confirm hospital LCs assessment, but it puts mom
in difficult situation: Who does she believe- an MD
or two Laction Consultants? We have tremendous difficulty with peds in our
area. I have only found a couple of ENTs who will do a frenotomy. I can't
figure it out, we have circumcisions being performed at abounding rates in
hospitals and yet practically no one will do a frenotomy!
Becky, please let me know how Dr. Jain's Tongue Tie Video is, we need
all the help we can get here in Tampa!
