Fellow Lactnetters- Hope you can help out with a rather touchy problem- One
of our "well babies" was noted to nurse well , but was listed as "spitty"-
then on day one of life, passed frank blood rectally- Baby was transferred
to NICU for evaluation, and observation- X-rays showed some abnormal air
patterns but supposedly no free air- (I'm on vacation and relaying info ...)
Baby was of course made NPO, and IV fluids started- So far, so good...I'm
told the Mother was told that this happened because she managed to eat a VERY
large amount of ice-cream the day before she went into labor, and obviously,
the baby is severely milk allergic! (Can you imagine the guilt???) Baby was
transferred to a tertiary care facility today for further eval.--My question:
Is this even a remote possibility as a cause??? (doesn't seem likely to me,
but then .....) and- How should we console/counsel this Mom--(we often keep
in touch with "our" families, while their baby is elsewhere) --Joan- wearing
two hats while "working" at home!
