Marie,

I've had similar experiences to those that you shared.  Because I do
counseling, it is easy for me to ask.  You mentioned being "prepared" for the
answer.

Due to the intensely intimate nature of our work, it makes sense that we
could very well be the first person she's spoken to. We are usually
accustomed to "counseling" beyond brfding issues.

Two things that I think are important in being prepared: validating and
allowing venting of whatever feelings she appears to be having (which may or
may not match our expectations); and referral to a therapist &/or support
group.  I think it behooves all of us in helping professions to have an
up-to-date referral list for just such instances.--Nancy
