I seem to remember a law suit here in Calif. where a hospital and a doctor
were sued for breastfeeding mismanagement that resulted in the infant
requiring expensive ABM. The mother's lawyer called me for information and
took a statement from me over the telephone (not quite a deposition, but it
was recorded).
The details as I remember: the mother had been in a car accident and was
given ibuphrophen for pain. The physician and the hospital told mom she had
to wean immediately. They bound her breasts down and gave her Parlodel
(bromocriptine?) to dry the milk. The baby ended up with severe allergies,
asthma attacks and had to be placed on nutramagen.
The parents were seeking damages for the cost of the child's multiple
hospitalizations and the cost of the formula.

I haven't got a clue what happened to the case. I referred the lawyer to Dr.
Sears, and the authors of Drugs in Pregnancy and Lactation as expert
witnesses. I did not feel comfortable enough to testify in court about
medications.

If the case was settled out of court would there be a record of it somewhere
or do they just disappear? How many such cases are settled *out of court* and
no one hears of them?
