Quoting from "Using Gentian Violet" by Dr. Jack Newman: "Gentian violet
(0.5-1% solution in water) is an excellent treatment for Candida albicans."
About 10 ml of gentian violet is plenty for entire treatment.
He recommends dipping a Q-tip into gentian violet then having baby suck on
swab for a few seconds- it spreads around the mouth quickly-if not, paint
the inside of the mouth to cover as much of the inside of the cheeks and
tongue as possible.
Put baby to breast- both baby's mouth and mom's nipple are treated.
If the baby nursed on both breasts after his mouth was treated with g.v.
there is no need to treat again that day. If he nursed on only one breast,
you should repeat the treatment for the other breast.
Treat each nipple as above once a day for three days.
The above is paraphrased from a handout prepared by Dr. Newman, Hospital for
Sick Children, Toronto, Ontario . He has given permission for his handout to
be copied.
