A couple of years ago I had a similar experience as Denise did with a
ABM rep. She brought me some literature to review, which I did in quite the
same way. About a month later, she met with the head nurse at the prenatal
clinic in the county that serves both the WIC population and hospital with
whom I work and presented their newest "promotion" project. The mom filled
out a card and received a "free" subscription to their monthly magazine and
a free case of their product. I'm sure you all know the program... She told
the nurse that I reveiwed their program and the magazine and gave it my
okey-dokey!! She even showed them a letter I had written to accompany the
remarks I had written on their original brochure!! I was LIVID!!
Thankfully, the information the rep used was outlined in writing, with my
name mentioned so I was sure of my facts and had documentation to back it
up. The nurse was wise enough to discuss it all with me before agreeing to
promote their program and was just as angry as I was about the whole
situation.
I handled the situation by writing a long and scathing letter
threatening to sue them for using my name in a way that would defame me and
sending it to the rep, her immediate superior, the president of the company,
the director of marketing of the company, the Comissioner of Health and
every pediatrician and obstrician in the county. I mentioned the rep by
name in the letter. The results were amazing! No only did the prenatal
clinic reject their program, but most of the ped and obs did as well and the
Health Comissioner wrote them a scathing letter in support of my position,
Now this is not to say that all of the people who rejected that program
later supported another ABM company's similar program, but I felt
vindicated! The last chapter of the story is that the rep in question no
longer works in the ABM division of that company.
So, please write lots of letters and let EVERYONE know that you are
being used in an unacceptable way and that they are in for a lawsuit if they
defame you in this way.
I wish you good luck. Please let me know how this all works out! I
am feeling angry for you!!
