I just heard Lori Brizee, MS,RD,CD speak, who is a Clinical Dietitian for NICU
infants at Childrens Hospital in Seattle. She said breastmilk is not adequate in
protein, vitamins and minerals for premature infants. But it can easily be
fortified with Human Milk Fortifiers. Different fortifiers differ in specific
nutrient make up. Some fortifiers can be added to increase calories if this is
appropriate, other can be added to increase Protein etc. But breastmilk is a
most appropriate feeding for the premature infants. So maybe this is what the
M.D. was saying. Also an essential fatty acid called DHA needed for normal
brain development is not found in any formula on the market but only in human
milk and fish oil.
Hope this helps,
