I'm catching up on all my digests after being denied access to my e-mail due
to computer upgrading on campus....
I lost a LOT of hair with my third, quite traumatic delivery (9 lb. 2.5 oz.
baby with major shoulder dystocia), but it was in the first five days
post-partum. It came out by the handfuls every time I brushed or washed my
hair. I've always attributed it to the stress of the birth event. It sure
doesn't fit the pattern of later onset (4-6 months postpartum) hair loss
described in the digest.
A word about the time spent on labor/delivery classes vs. the time spent on
bf classes -- while I think every mother/father should attend both, my
initial response was that sure, labor and delivery take only a short time
and breastfeeding lasts a long time (forever at my house) but you have lots
of time to get breastfeeding "right" -- to get help, ask questions, do it
wrong at first and then fix the problems. With labor it's a "now or never"
sort of thing, you either handle it well or you don't and there's no
forgiveness of mistakes. Besides, before you've had the baby everything
focuses on your terror of the birth process itself, and very little on the
reality of the baby you will have at the end of it.
