As a new subscriber to Lactnet, I would like to briefly introduce
myself. My name is Michelle (Shelley) McGuire, and I am a researcher
studying human lactational physiology at the University of Idaho. I
received my BS and MS from the University of Illinois (in biology and
human nutrition, respectively) and my PhD from Cornell University (in
human nutrition). To date, I have conducted research on 1) selenium
status in lactating and nonlactating women and their children and 2) the
effects of maternal nutrient intake on infant suckling behaviors and
maternal ovulatory status (using the rat). I am now beginning to
look at the interactions among maternal nutrition, suckling behaviors
and ovulation in postpartum women. We are also looking at a specific
fatty acid (conjugated linoleic acid; CLA) in human milk and infant
formula. In general, I am interested in how lactation and
breastfeeding influence the health and well-being of both mom and
baby.

I look forward to the interaction that occurs on this
network.

Shelley
