We no longer instruct mothers who choose to bottlefeed or mothers who are
weaning to bind their breast. This generally does not stop the swelling and
discomfort associated with engorgement. Also, I have associated binding with
plugged ducts and mastitis due to increased pressure in the breast and milk
stasis. In out hospital and practice , we recomend the use of a good, well
fitting bra for support, and use of Cool Cabbage Leaf Compresses for decrease
of swelling and discomfort. We still keep some of the old 6 in. ace wraps on
our supply cart because a portion of our clients are of lower income and
sometimes do not have a bra to wear, these ladies are provided a wrap to
"support well", not bind tight , the breast. The Cabbage does wonders !! And
our MD's tell their moms about it, and then recomend they call us for assist.
PS - The docs do sometime tease us about our "herbal" treatments, but they
cont. to recomend it.
