Barbara, I once was invited to put up a booth for La Leche League at a
special fair for unwed moms at the local college. Like you, I had a
discreet display, and reprints on topics to distribute. Planned
Parenthood set up right next to us, complete with a cookie jar filled
with condoms. The girls skirted my booth warily, but when the PP lady
came in, they laughed and joked and practically skipped up to her,
well-acquainted, making comments about how they "sure could have used
these last night". Meanwhile, a few teachers dragged their reluctant
proteges up to our booth, imploring them to "just take a look,
breastfeeding is wonderful."
I found the whole experience most intriguing and ironic. Yes, we've got a
whole lot of things mixed up, don't we? And the only kids I see who have
it a little more straight are those who have grown up with breastfeeding
moms and extended families. Change is just going to take time..... <sigh>
